Maps Maps Maps! Part One - David Hitch

We at Arena have recently discovered whilst looking through our extensive archives, that we have an incredible number of illustrated maps! From all places and projects maps speak to us with graphics, icons, lettering and colour. From factual to fantasy, we’ve got loads of them, so we thought we would make a compilation and share them with you!

So, let’s start off with a bit about maps and why we like them so much. Illustrative maps have been around for over 2000 years, and over many centuries, maps of any country or land were a dangerous possession if they fell into the wrong hands, so they were either carefully guarded or destroyed. This changed when World War II started, then people realised they really needed them, so the art of cartography really took off. However, we want to show you some more recent and hopefully some more lighthearted ones.

David Hitch is our first port of call. Over the years David has produced a plethora of colourful and engaging maps, so it was about time we showed off his marvellous collection! Mostly based in London, they have featured on many a TFL poster, with his limited colour palette and hand lettering, give them a contemporary and timeless feel.

In these posts we want to highlight an appreciation for hand rendered lettering, which so many of our artists do well, and the beauty of maps as an informative piece of illustration (whether for the real world or not,) or just a beautiful image and format that gives us a sense of place.

For Valentine’s Day this year, David designed our promotional postcard, based around a fictitious romantic island.
