We are delighted to announce that Alex T. Smith has won the World Illustration Awards Children’s Book Category with his beautiful illustrations for Dodie Smith’s The Hundred and One Dalmatians.

Alex is on a roll, with Claude All at Sea, the first Claude picture book out earlier this month, then Disney Junior picking up Claude to turn everyone’s favourite beret wearing dog into an animated TV series, now his adored drawings of some other famous canine friends has won Alex a new accolade.

Published by Egmont this is the 60th anniverary edition of the beloved classic, Alex artfully depicts the the terrifying Cruella De Vil, who is more fearsome than ever and portrays the playful pups with humour and more spots than you can imagine!

You can get a glimpse into Alex’s process reading his answers to some important questions on how he creates his artwork.

“My objective was to set my illustrations in 1956 – the year the book was published and to make the illustrations reflect this in the styling of clothes and accessories and settings etc. , I wanted to make the illustrations dramatic, cinematic and give the animals personalities. I also wanted to make the puppies as pudgy and as cute as possible in contrast to Cruella DeVil.”
