Frances Castle‘s full colour illustrations are a joy to behold in Spot the Mistake: Lands of Long Ago, a fun-packed 48 page non-fiction book with a twist, written by Amanda Wood and designed by Mike Jolley.
Published this month by Wide Eyed Editions, Lands of Long Ago invites you to turn detective by testing your knowledge of history. Would a Mayan warrior have worn a watch? Would a Viking have used a compass? Try spotting twenty mistakes in every detailed scene and then turn the page to discover if you were right and learn more interesting facts about ancient civilisations, including the Romans, the Ancient Greeks and Egyptians. Overall, there are ten scenes of life from long ago – from Stone Age farmers to jousting knights and Egyptian pharaohs to plundering pirates. A few of the mistakes may seem pretty obvious, others are a little harder to find, but you have the help of two young history detectives on every page who will give you a few hints along the way.
This large format book is great to pour over, Frances has illustrated each diorama with precision as well as humour. Every scene has it’s own unique and sophisticated colour palette for a fully immersive, entertaining and educational read for children and adults alike.
“Eagle-eyed young historians will love scanning the pages of this oversize book… Overall, the whole effect lends itself to teamwork, loads of discussion, and lots of giggles” – Booklist
