Award-winning illustrator Levi Pinfold brings Norse Mythology to life.
This month we celebrate the publication of Norse Mythology by Neil Gaiman, illustrated by multi award-winning illustrator Levi Pinfold. Working from his studio in the Australian bush, Levi has showcased his numerous artistic skills to bring this comprehensive collection of stories to life.
There is something captivating and mystical about stories from centuries ago. Pagan yarns from pre-medieval Viking communities, drenched in the essence of their magnificent natural surroundings, these age-old stories have certainly held the attention of eager readers, listeners, adventurers and fellow storytellers for many years.
Levi works across a number of creative mediums including pen, ink and pencil with which he marks out incredibly intricate development sketches; paint and pigments with which he creates vast and breath-taking landscapes and vistas; and then digitally to develop texture and intensity of light and shade.
“If my sixteen-year-old self had consulted the Norns or sacrificed an eye to drink from Mimir’s well to gain knowledge of the future, I would not have believed that I’d get to work on this. In fact, my head would have exploded and I wouldn’t be here, so I guess I’m pretty lucky that I was busy reading Sandman instead. Both Neil Gaiman’s work and the stories of the Norse Gods have been such a huge presence in my reading life, and it has been beyond exciting to be handed the reins of Slepnir for a while to gallop across the thunderous sky in defiance of Ragnarok.”
A bestseller on first publication, Levi has used his incredible narrative skills to interpret these amazing stories which are a touchstone for our creative culture today.
Odin the all-father, Thor and Loki, goddesses, giants and dwarfs, enchantments and betrayal, all life is portrayed on the pages of this book in rich and bloody detail.
