This month, we shine a spotlight on two extraordinary projects that showcase the stunning artistry of Arena illustrator, Richard Johnson. Renowned for his evocative and expressive illustrations, Richard’s work has captivated audiences across publishing, advertising, and beyond. With clients such as Harrods, Cadbury, and Marks & Spencer, and a track record of bringing best-selling books to life, his illustrations continue to leave a lasting impression.
Richard Johnson's latest projects -The Last House in The Row by Lesley Parr and The Curse of the Silvan Oaks by Georgia Channon - demonstrate his exceptional ability to infuse stories with depth, emotion, and a visual sprinkling of magic.
The Last House in The Row, is a gentle story about the relationship of a little girl and a lonely elderly neighbour. Richard’s signature style of exaggerated lighting, rich textures, and thoughtful character design enhances this touching tale of friendship across generations. Richard has a special talent for representing environments and landscapes, fastidiously researching and referencing people, places and landmarks mentioned in the manuscripts. Often found drawing in his trusty sketch book, Richard frequently refers to his original illustrations, which he then colours and renders digitally to create his final artwork. His intricate spot illustrations throughout the book gently guide and immerse readers in the story’s heartfelt moments. Dyslexia friendly, The Last House in The Row is published Barrington Stoke on 10th April.
Meanwhile, Pushkin Press selected Richard as the chosen artist to illustrate the cover for debut author Georgia Channon’s very first book: The Curse of the Silvan Oaks, publishing on April 10th. Richard has crafted a mesmerizing cover that captures the essence of an epic adventure featuring two children from different times and different places. With expert use of color, movement, and mystical elements, the artwork invites readers into a world of ancient kingdoms, perilous quests, and powerful magic featuring mystical Kings and Queens embroiled in a merciless war. His visually arresting and utterly absorbing cover treatment, captures the movement and peril the lead protagonists encounter.
